On the off chance you haven't seen the talent, it gives you extra health, damage, and 2 extra AP to your regen/cap per turn. Recently I've been playing with a friend, and we decided to try out a Lone Wolf party. There is some foreshadowing of conflict between players during the game, but otherwise right from the beginning it seems like a chosen-ones-save-the-world type story. You have played AWO so you know how intense it gets, and I don't know if the main story in DOS2 gets close but I doubt it.

You are mostly free to roam and explore the maps. DOS2 has often multiple routes to the same target, lots of optional quests, some quest lines related to the character backgrounds so they depend on which characters you have in the party. In general I think identifying with a character is a lot easier in AWO simply due to the first/third person view and graphics and focus on just two.Īs for the story in general, AWO is completely linear. You have the exact same party size and the campaign is probably a little faster because you don't have to communicate, but you have to steer 2 or 4 party members and can't really identify with one. A bit like the decisions in AWO, but it's not a contest.ĭOS2 is really boring to play alone IMO, but it is possible. But you have different approaches, who talks with an NPC and what to say, and only the talking PC can decide. Most puzzles sooner or later require different skills that you can't all have on one character. It was so far similar in that you have to communicate strategies and can build for different strengths and weaknesses. In both AWO and DOS it doesn't make a lot of sense to switch players mid-game. I haven't played DOS1 and only half of DOS2, because much like a D&D party you have to find time to play together. The new Baldur's Gate also looks to be that way but I haven't played it. It's probably the closest thing to a D&D experience in a video game. I really loved how me and my friends had distinct roles in the party and we weren't just doing the exact same thing with the illusion of a co-op experience. You could be playing with a friend and it wouldn't make much difference since you'd both be mindlessly spamming auto attack and skills not necessarily depending on each other in any given fight.ĭOS games are a slow burn and not everyone might be into them, but I think they're perfect games to play with friends. I actually don't like Torchlight and Diablo as co-op games as I view them to be mindless clickfests. that have similar dynamics but I think turn-based gameplay provides a better co-op experience as well. I'm sure there are many other co-op RPGs like Torchlight, Diablo, Grim Dawn etc. In DOS, we were in constant communication over how we could solve a puzzle, which route to take, what strategy to use in a fight, which skills/talents to get for our party when we level up etc. What we'd usually do in a co-op game is shut off our brains, talk about something other than the game and mindlessly kill hordes of zombies in Left 4 Dead.
DOS, on the other hand, was a long, progressive journey that doesn't repeat itself at all. If I ever put this many hours into co-op, it was probably something like Payday or GTA Online where you grind the same thing over and over again. Me and a friend recently put 200+ hours into completing both of these games and I don't think I was ever engaged this much into a co-op game.
